Roseanne's Summer Vacation- Chapter 3
Milena’s mother, Hannah Malinowski, could be best described as the modern-day reincarnation of Sonia Humphrey. Always elegantly dressed, with appropriate jewellery, and impeccable hairstyle. She was the epitome of perfection and style, the best example of a prosperous office lady in the Land of Po.
“But you’ve made a promise, Mr Orville…” she was talking on the phone in a graceful tone. “Of course, my daughter wants to come, and I personally believe it would be a disservice to children had the trip not come to fruition.”
At that moment, Milena and Thally walked inside and immediately went to the kitchen. Milena religiously unpacked the Gouda she bought and placed it in the fridge. Hannah observed what her daughter was doing and wondered if something bad had happened.
She continued over the phone. “As a chairperson of the Parent Council, I implore you… Yes, I assure you that there will be a minimum of five students to partake in the trip. I will make sure of that personally… It’s not a problem either. I will make a reservation myself… Thank you once again, and have a great day!” Hannah Malinowski hung up and joined the newcomers in the kitchen.
“Mommy…” Milena said.
“What on earth is going on, Milena?” she asked her daughter. “You always have a full list of items to buy, and today you come back only with cheese.”
“It’s because we didn’t have enough money, Mrs M,” Thally said. “It turned out like this by accident.”
Milena hunched in shame and showed her credit card. “I think I broke it. Please don’t be mad at me.”
Hannah carefully examined a piece of plastic that was as scratched as a lottery ticket. “Oh, dear. There’s nothing to be mad about. It’s only a card,” she kissed Milena gently on the cheek. “Now both of you sit next to me. I have something important to say.”
The girls did as they were told. They sat behind the large counter. Hannah thought about something carefully before she spoke:
“Milena, do you have any plans for this year’s vacation? Any at all? That is, apart from having sleepovers with Thally?”
Milena lowered her head. “If you want me to go to another scout’s camp, then it’s no way! They had a social margin from the orphanages there! It was crazy! One hundred and twenty psychos running with knives! I won’t survive this ever again!”
“Look, I’m not talking about a scout’s camp, okay? I thought these types of trips were safe, but you can’t trust the advertisements nowadays. I was thinking about a smaller trip with a group of people you know.”
“Like what exactly?”
“Well, Mr Orville promised a school trip, did he? We were just talking on the phone, and I kindly reminded him about that promise. He is going to take you, Milena, and you, Thalia, on a vacation trip.”
“Really? Where to?” the daughter asked.
“To Gdynia.”
“Gdynia?!” Thally screamed. “So we’re talking about the Baltic Sea? Right on.”
“Yes, but you need to find three other students for the trip as soon as possible. The school regulation says a minimum of five students have to participate.”
“Oh, but the school year ended already! Can’t we go private or something?” Thally asked.
“Theoretically, you can, but then there will be no discounts for transport. Are you willing to pay double?”
“Well…” Thally looked at Milena, and Milena looked at Thally. They made a decision even if they didn’t voice it. Thally suddenly said, “Grab the phone, baby. We’re gonna make some calls.”
