Roseanne's Summer Vacation- Chapter 38

Roseanne wasn’t at the police station at all. The girl had no idea, but she was a street away from where Mr Orville was held captive. The backpack filled with hard drives in boxes kept jingling when she was running.

The path leading to the ferry terminal was dark and empty. Trucks used to go there in the afternoon but rarely in the evening. Train tracks crossed the path in the middle without even being properly marked or having a barrier. Somebody with bad eyesight could potentially get run over by a cargo train.

It was almost 9 p.m. Roseanne lay low in the bushes and closely observed the tracks ahead of her. Just in case, the Beretta behind her belt was already loaded. There was no movement at all. A single lamp post barely illuminated the spot where Tae-jun was supposed to appear.

Suddenly, a warning beep spread across the street. A cargo train was entering the harbour. Roseanne could hear the massive transport filled with coal approaching. Not long after, a locomotive emerged, pulling the wagons. Suddenly, her phone vibrated in her pocket. The girl checked it and saw a text message from Tae-jun: Throw the backpack under the passing wagons now.

The cargo shipments like that had almost fifty wagons hooked up together, which gave her a couple of minutes. She texted back: Where is Mr Orville?

A response appeared: When the train comes through.

Still crouching in the bushes, she looked around hesitantly. Her knees froze from fear that was creeping upon her, but Roseanne knew she had to act. She anticipated possible outcomes. It was now or never.

She came out of the hideout, ran up, and swiftly threw the backpack under the moving carriages. It was hard to make it out in the dark, but the backpack went through to the other side.

Tae-jun, of course, waited on the other side of the busy tracks—without Mr Orville. He intercepted the backpack and took out his semi-automatic Glock, ready to kill Roseanne as soon as the last wagon cleared out of the way.

The boy waited and counted the remaining wagons: 4… 3… 2… 1…

In a heartbeat, he fired a bullet in the dark. His finger on the trigger acted quicker than his brain, exactly as he was taught. Don’t think, just shoot. That was the golden rule.

But Roseanne was nowhere to be seen…

Baffled, Tae-jun crossed the tracks and had a look around. The cargo train has already entered the harbour in the distance. The road was completely empty.

“Shit!” he cursed. ”I should have ended her in the hotel.”

There was nothing he could do about the missing girl, but at least he had the backpack. He quickly checked the contents. The hard drives were inside, but he had to hook them up to a computer to make sure they weren’t damaged or tampered with.

He headed back to the Khatanga.
