Hunting for new Tokusatsu shows (The unconventional way)
I tried watching Ultraman Dyna last night, but I just can't get into it. The show is supposedly a direct continuation of Ultraman Tiga, but it has a different GUTS team and a new hero. What is more, the aesthetics of the new series and character dynamics were visibly inspired by Top Gun, so I'm not sure if I want to continue.
I was bored last night, so I searched through Toku sources online and decided to do something fun. I downloaded the first episodes of shows I hadn't heard about at all. I didn't check any release info on IMDb or synopses, just looked at the titles and went in completely blind. Here's what I discovered:
Ultraman Great (1990) - A Japanese-Australian co-production, the aim of which was to introduce the franchise to the West. It's quite entertaining, but the production value is significantly low when compared to Tiga. In addition, all the characters speak English.
Will I continue watching? Yes, because it's only 13 episodes long.
Voicelugger (1999) - My first impression was, "What the hell am I watching?" The opening prologue is fairly serious. We get to see an old, experienced ranger who saves four children. They are used as means to enhance the power of an evil entity. Pure fantasy stuff. Then, we cut to the present day and follow one of the children, now an adult, who is a die-hard fan of Kamen Rider, and her special power is the ability to scream. So, the latter part of the episode is essentially a Toku spoof. I was surprised to learn today that it was the last production created by the legendary Shotaro Ishinomori.
Will I continue watching? Maybe, because it has only 13 episodes.
Vanny Knights (1999) - Now this is quite funny. We follow a dude who lives with his younger sister. The dude is essentially a failure who gets fired from his corporate job. All of a sudden, he gets attacked by an alien who wants a "Millennium Saber" from him. It's not explained what this mythical thing is. However, three ladies suddenly step into action and save the dude. They call themselves the Vanny Knights.
Will I continue watching? Definitely, it seems wacky and fun.
Brothers' Fist Bycrosser (1985) - Another Shotaro Ishinomori production made for Toei. Two ordinary brothers are chosen by the powers of the universe to fight an empire of evil aliens who try to conquer Earth. Strong vibes of early Super Sentai and Toei's Spider-Man. To be honest, I thought it was a '70s production, but it was made in 1985.
Will I continue watching? Not sure, I'm not in the mood for brotherly power right now.
That's it for the moment. Maybe I will repeat this surprise viewing sometime later. In the meantime, I will also post this text on my blog.
